Jobs in Ceramics
A regular Ceramics Volunteer can use the lab for creating personal ceramic artwork.
Daily jobs -
Choose a day and time slot each week!
- Morning Prep: 9:15 - 10:15
- Lunch Hour Prep: 11:30 - 12:30
- Afternoon Prep: 1:20 - 2:30
Help Ms. Dayton and/or staff assistant with daily preparations-
Learn to use slab roller, dip work in clear glaze, prepare work for kiln, or load/unload a kiln
- Afternoon Classroom Help: 2:30 - 3:30
General assistance during class time. Become familiar with ceramic construction processes. Work with staff assistants at times. Encourage children to work independently, helping child only when clearly necessary -end of class clean up, etc.
- After School Help: 3:15 - 4:15 or as long as you want to stay
Help with clean up and preparations for next day
Variable hours - weekly jobs
- Glaze and slip preparation
Learn to mix standard clear glaze and white and colored slips.
Recondition glazes in small 6 container holders. These containers need to be remoistened and/or refilled. Recondition slip in bottles.
- Clay preparation
Learn to use pug mill for reconditioning used clay.
Other Jobs
- Kiln shelf conditioning
One half day once a trimester -
Learn to scrape old kiln wash and apply new coat on fragile shelves
- Display design
Help arrange displays of children's artwork, as needed.
Help to matt drawings for display, as needed.
- Photography
Occasional experienced photographer to help with photo documentation. Digital photos with school camera. After color/light correction, create web galleries in Photoshop using Photo's class computer or your own computer.
